Published April 2025 · 5 min read

Google Docs has a built-in word counter, but most people don't know about the real-time display feature.

Method 1: Menu (Basic)

Go to Tools → Word count. Shows words, characters, characters without spaces, and pages.

Method 2: Keyboard Shortcut (Faster)

  • Windows/Linux: Ctrl + Shift + C
  • Mac: Cmd + Shift + C

Method 3: Real-Time Word Count (Hidden!)

This is the feature most people miss:

  1. Open word count (Ctrl+Shift+C)
  2. Check "Display word count while typing"
  3. Click OK

Now you'll see a live word count in the bottom-left corner that updates as you type!

Select specific text first, then use Ctrl+Shift+C. It shows the count for just the selected text.
