How to Parse a Unix Timestamp in Excel (Simple Formula)
Published April 2025 · 5 min read
Excel doesn't natively understand Unix timestamps, but a simple formula converts them instantly.
The Formula
=(A1/86400)+DATE(1970,1,1)
Where A1 contains your Unix timestamp (e.g., 1713000000).
Step by Step
- Put your timestamp in cell A1
- In cell B1, enter:
=(A1/86400)+DATE(1970,1,1) - Format cell B1 as Date/Time
For Millisecond Timestamps
If your timestamp is in milliseconds (13 digits), divide by 1000 first:
=(A1/86400000)+DATE(1970,1,1)
With Time Zone
Add hours offset for your timezone (e.g., +5:30 for IST):
=(A1/86400)+DATE(1970,1,1)+(5.5/24)
Google Sheets
Same formula works in Google Sheets. Or use the built-in EPOCHTODATE function (if available in your locale).
